How to Connect ChatGPT to WhatsApp (No Code, 2-Minute Setup)

If your customers, suppliers and team all write to you on WhatsApp, you probably spend a big part of your day scrolling through chats. Once you connect ChatGPT to your WhatsApp, you can just ask:

  • "Who's waiting for a reply from me since yesterday?"
  • "What did the supplier group decide about Friday's delivery?"
  • "Tell Ana we have it in blue and I can deliver Thursday."

ChatGPT reads your chats, finds what you need, and sends messages from your own number, but only when you ask it to.

This guide shows you how to set it up with WhatsApp MCP. You don't need to install anything, write code or get a new number, and it takes about two minutes.

What you need

  • WhatsApp on your phone. Regular WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business, with the number you already use.
  • A paid ChatGPT plan: Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Edu. ChatGPT adds WhatsApp through Developer mode, which isn't available on the free plan. On a work or school account, your admin may need to allow it.
  • ChatGPT in your browser (chatgpt.com) or the ChatGPT desktop app for the setup. You can't add it from the ChatGPT mobile app.
  • Two minutes, with your phone nearby.

You don't need a new phone number, Meta's WhatsApp Business API, a developer, or a server.

Step 1: Get your WhatsApp link

  1. Go to wa-mcp.com.
  2. Under Which AI do you use?, choose ChatGPT.
  3. Click Generate my ChatGPT link and copy the link.
  4. Under Where do you use ChatGPT?, pick Browser or Desktop app to see the steps for it. They're the same as Step 2 below.

Save the link somewhere safe, like a password manager or a private note. It's shown only once, and it works like a password: anyone who has it can use your WhatsApp. If you ever lose it, generate a new one and link the same phone. Your account and subscription carry over.

Step 2: Add the link to ChatGPT

ChatGPT's menus are only in English for this part, so the steps use the English names.

In your browser (chatgpt.com)

  1. Open Settings → Apps → Advanced settings and turn on Developer mode.
  2. Click Create app.
  3. Name it WhatsApp, paste your link, choose No authentication, tick I trust this application and click Create.

In the ChatGPT desktop app (Mac or Windows)

  1. Open Settings, search MCP and click Add MCP server. Don't see it? Search Developer mode, turn it on and search MCP again.
  2. Name it WhatsApp, choose Streamable HTTP if it asks, paste your link and save.

ChatGPT shows a warning when you turn on Developer mode, because it lets you add apps OpenAI hasn't reviewed. That's expected: it's how ChatGPT lets you add WhatsApp MCP.

Using Codex? Pick Terminal (Codex) on wa-mcp.com instead. It gives you a single command to run.

Step 3: Link your WhatsApp

Open a new chat in ChatGPT. In the browser, click +, choose Developer mode and select WhatsApp, so ChatGPT can use it in that chat. Then type:

Connect my WhatsApp

ChatGPT walks you through it and gives you two ways to link:

With a QR code (best if ChatGPT is open on your computer)

  1. ChatGPT shows you a QR code.
  2. On your phone, open WhatsApp → Settings (iPhone) or the ⋮ menu (Android) → Linked devices → Link device.
  3. Scan the QR code.

With a pairing code

  1. Ask ChatGPT for a pairing code instead and give it your phone number with country code.
  2. ChatGPT gives you an 8-character code.
  3. In WhatsApp, go to Linked devices → Link device → Link with phone number instead, and type the code.

This is the same way WhatsApp Web links to your account. WhatsApp MCP shows up as a linked device, and you can remove it from that screen at any time.

Step 4: Try it

Start with a few questions to see how it works:

  • "Who's waiting for a reply from me in the last 24 hours?"
  • "Summarize my chat with Carlos from this week."
  • "Find the address Laura sent me."
  • "Tell Ana I'll be there at 7."

Before ChatGPT sends anything, it checks the recipient and the message with you. ChatGPT may also ask you to approve the WhatsApp action itself. Nothing goes out unless you ask for it.

What ChatGPT can see after you link

When you link a new device, WhatsApp shares some of your recent messages with it, the same as when you open WhatsApp Web for the first time. From then on, every new message is available.

  • ChatGPT can read the recent messages in a chat, including what WhatsApp shared when you linked.
  • Search covers messages that arrived after you linked, up to the last 90 days.

So if you link today, "What did we quote John last week?" may find nothing yet. A week from now it will.

How much it costs

WhatsApp MCP is billed separately from your ChatGPT plan.

  • Free trial: 1 hour of every feature, no credit card.
  • After that, free: ChatGPT can still read, summarize and search your chats and send text messages to people who've written to you in the last 90 days. Messages it sends end with "Sent via wa-mcp.com".
  • Pro: removes that line and adds starting new conversations (with anti-ban guardrails), sending files, scheduling, and editing, reacting to and deleting messages. US$9/month, US$7/month billed quarterly, or US$4/month billed annually. Every plan has unlimited use.

To subscribe, just ask ChatGPT: "Subscribe me to WhatsApp MCP." It gives you a secure Stripe checkout link.

If something doesn't work

  • You can't find Developer mode. It needs a paid ChatGPT plan. On a work or school account, ask your admin to allow it.
  • ChatGPT doesn't seem to know about WhatsApp. Start a new chat. In the browser, click +, choose Developer mode and select WhatsApp again: ChatGPT only uses it in chats where it's selected.
  • ChatGPT can't connect to the app. Check that you pasted the whole link, including the part after ?token=, and chose No authentication.
  • The QR code expired. Ask ChatGPT for a new one.
  • You lost your link. Generate a new one at wa-mcp.com, delete the old WhatsApp app in ChatGPT's settings, add it again with the new link, and link the same phone. Your account and subscription carry over.

Frequently asked questions

Does it work with WhatsApp Business? Yes. It connects to the number you already use, on regular WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business. There's no new number and nothing to migrate.

Does it work on ChatGPT's free plan? No. ChatGPT only lets you add apps like WhatsApp MCP in Developer mode, which needs a paid plan (Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Edu). WhatsApp MCP itself has a free plan.

Will my customers know ChatGPT sent the message? No. Messages go out from your own number, exactly as if you had typed them.

Can this get my number banned? To WhatsApp, it's a normal linked device, like WhatsApp Web. Most bans come from sending too much, too fast, especially to people who never wrote to you, so WhatsApp MCP has guardrails built in: “typing…” before every message, no bulk sending, and new conversations spaced out (at most 1 a minute and 10 every 12 hours). Chats with people who've written to you aren't limited. Other WhatsApp tools send whatever the AI asks. No tool can fully remove the risk on an unofficial connection, but this keeps your usage looking like a person, not a bot.

Does my phone need to stay on? No. Linked devices work on their own, so your phone can be off or offline.

Can I keep using WhatsApp on my phone as usual? Yes. Nothing changes on your phone.

Is my data private? WhatsApp MCP stores your messages only so ChatGPT can search them, and deletes them automatically after 90 days. Your data is never sold or used to train AI models. The messages ChatGPT reads are also processed by OpenAI under its own privacy policy, as with anything else you share with ChatGPT.

Is this an official WhatsApp or OpenAI product? No. WhatsApp MCP is an independent product. It isn't made, endorsed or sponsored by WhatsApp, Meta or OpenAI.

Can I connect two numbers, like personal and work? Yes. Generate one link per number and add each one to ChatGPT as its own app, for example "WhatsApp Personal" and "WhatsApp Work". Each number needs its own subscription.

Can I use the same link in Claude or other AI tools too? Yes. Add the same link to every AI tool you use, and they'll all use the same WhatsApp account. See how to connect Claude to WhatsApp.

How do I disconnect or delete everything? Ask ChatGPT to "unlink my WhatsApp", or remove the device under Linked devices in WhatsApp. To remove WhatsApp from ChatGPT, delete the app in ChatGPT's settings. To delete your account and data, ask ChatGPT to "delete my WhatsApp MCP account". That also cancels your subscription. Your WhatsApp account and chats on your phone aren't affected.
